Applying to the University

Students can get a feel for the program before auditioning and declare "BA in Dance" or "pre-BFA in Dance," which allows them to register for Dance courses, or they may choose to remain on the BA Dance track.

Texas State University’s beautiful 507 acre campus houses more than 38,000 students, which makes our university one of the largest in the state of Texas. In addition, the Department of Theatre and Dance is one of the top schools in Texas for dance.

Applications Information

Spring: March 9, 2024, 9 am - 4 pm || Applications will open on January 16, 2024.

Audition Information

An audition is required before admittance to the BFA Performance and Choreography or BFA Dance Teacher Certification programs. Students interested in these programs can audition before they begin to attend TXST or in the fall or spring of their first year at TXST. Live auditions are held once in the fall for admittance into either program the following spring or fall, and once in the spring for admittance into either program the following fall.

There is no audition necessary for the BA in Dance. 

All students interested in the BFA Performance and Choreography or Teacher Certification programs must audition before entrance to the Dance Division, or by the end of their first year.

Allow approximately two weeks after the audition date for decision letters to be emailed. 

  • Applicants that are Undecided are required to perform a solo at the audition. 
     
    The solo must be choreographed by the applicant, 2 minutes max. This can be any dance style to any genre of music. If the music contains lyrics, the lyrics must be clean/ appropriate. 
     
    The adjudicators are looking for the following: Clear beginning, middle, end - Creative: unique voice/ ideas - Clear visual focus - Clear phrasing - Proper alignment - Engaged performative presence - Developed theme.

    Headshots and letters of recommendation are no longer required. The application will ask for the contact information of two references.

Sample Schedule (subject to change):

8:30 am: Studios open, faculty available for meet-and-greet
9:00 am: Check in at Registration Desk
9:30 - 10:30 am: Ballet
10:35 - 11:35 am: Modern Contemporary
11:40 - 12:30 pm: Jazz
12:30 - 1:00 pm: Lunch (bring a sack lunch) and Q & A with Faculty. Teacher Certification Applicants are free to go.
1:00 - 4:00 pm: Perf & Chor and Undecided Applicants perform solo.

Attire:

  • Form-fitting, all black: leotard or form-fitting camisole/ tank with leggings or tights.
  • No shoes on the dance studio floor. We prefer that dancers do not wear socks, as our wood floors can be slippery. Approved foot attire: barefoot, ballet slippers, jazz shoes, half-sole lyrical shoes or footundeez
  • Long hair pulled back, out of eyes, and off the neck.
  • No dangling jewelry.
     

Location:

Auditions are held in Jowers Center on the TXST campus located at Jowers Access Road, San Marcos, TX.

Parking:

Parking lots directly next to Jowers building will be available. From 5PM Fridays through 7PM Sundays, Parking Services does NOT enforce “No Permit” violations on Visitor/ Guest vehicles. Visitors can park for free in permit zones (all colors).

Auditions

Auditions are required for the BFA Performance and Choreography and BFA Dance Teacher Certification programs. There is no audition for the BA in Dance.
