Denise Maxwell Cochran

Denise headshot Denise Maxwell Cochran just recently retired as RRISD’s Dance Coordinator for the Fine Arts. She also served as the Middle School Dance Program Coordinator and the Coordinator for Elementary dance for the three Arts Integration Academies in RRISD. Denise has been a dance educator and administrator in the public school system for 33 years. She began her career in the Katy ISD starting their fine art dance programs and then moved back home to Austin to open McNeil High School, RRISD’s third high school.

Denise served as the head dance director for the McNeil High School Majestics and dance program for 15 years. She also served as the Fine Art Department chair for 5 years. She left McNeil to serve RRISD further in the Middle School dance programs and begin her role as Dance Curriculum Specialist. Denise enjoyed working and leading all of the high school programs and their dance educators while continuing to grow the middle school dance and wellness programs.

Denise holds a Bachelor of Art is teaching Dance degree from Sam Houston State University. She currently serves as Past President of Texas Dance Educators Association where she was awarded Texas Dance Director of the Year and the Lifetime Achievement Award for TDEA. Denise was most recently awarded the Outstanding Service and Leadership award for her work in RRISD from the National Dance Education Organization. She also served as a member of the Executive Board for the Center for Educator Development for the Fine Arts and was appointed by the State Board of Education to serve on the TEKS revision committee. Denise also enjoys her supervisory role with Texas State University and preparing the Student teachers for their future as educators. She also enjoys supporting many of the state dance programs with staff develop training for their dance educators.

Denise is an Austin native and loves living in Round Rock. She has been married to her wonderful husband Oliver for 28 years. She is the proud mom to Oliver III, a Texas State Bobcat studying a major in Psychology with a minor in Business Administration and married to Jessica and proud parents of Brody.  Also proud mom to William who is 21 years old and studying Communications and Sports Management at the University of Texas.  They keep her life fulfilled and complete. As an educator, she simply loves the art of dance and takes immense pride in spreading that passion to all of her teachers and students.
