Spring Awakening

Spring Awakening General Auditions and Callbacks: instructions, guidelines, and schedule:

Please note: all of the information/schedule listed in this notice pertains to the audition process for Spring Awakening only. The audition process for other shows produced within the season will be published separately.

In addition – Pippin will not be produced during the Fall 2020/Spring 2021 season.

Rehearsals & General commitment:

Spring Awakening will hold auditions and cast at the top of the fall semester (see schedule below). The anticipated commitment for music rehearsals in the fall will be 7 to 9 work-days from 6:30 to 10:30 pm and will not conflict with BLPC or daytime classes. Not all cast members will be called for every rehearsal. The show will hold the majority of the rehearsals and perform in the spring semester. All dates will be publicized prior to the start of general auditions on Friday, August 21st.

Spring Awakening auditions and callbacks will be done virtually and with a combined process of video submissions and virtual/live callbacks. 

All video submissions & audition materials are to be sent to sr47@txstate.ed by Monday, August 17.

  4. One video of auditioner singing vocal side (choices provided on the online callboard)
  5. One video of auditioner performing acting side (choices provided on the online callboard)
  6. One video of auditioned performing dance combination (see training video and combo below)

Please note: you may only submit an audition video using the sides & tracks provided via the online callboard. 


Actors called back for Spring Awakening will be notified via a general Canvas announcement on Friday evening, August 21st.  Callbacks will begin on Saturday, August 22nd and can continue until Tuesday, August 25th. Please keep all times open and available for callbacks and use the audition form to list any conflicts during the callbacks schedule. All callbacks will be virtual and in real-time using Zoom/Zoom webinar. Instructions will be sent prior to callbacks.

For general auditions, please prepare one of the character song cuts, and one of the scene or monologue cuts. If interested in multiple roles, you may prepare one additional selection of either song or scene/monologue. All material for this audition is provided for you. Callback sides are also made available, please double-check that you are submitting the appropriate material for general auditions.

The events and themes addressed in Spring Awakening affect everyone and the creative team is committed to casting practices that reflect a wide and diverse range of voices and perspectives. We welcome and encourage actors to audition without regard to ethnicity, type, or ability/disability. Additionally, the genders indicated in the breakdown below are specific to the pronouns used in the script, however, the creative team is considering all gender identities for all roles provided that the performer can execute the vocal requirements without transposition. This musical contains violent situations, simulated sexual encounters, and suggested suicide.


WENDLA - Age: 15 to 20 Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: E3

Innocent. With every passing day, she grows more curious about the world around her and her changing body. Both vulnerable and a willing participant in her evolution. Explores her newly-found sexuality with Melchior. She discovers the harsh realities and consequences of her new passions in a closed society.


ILSE - Age: 15 to 20 Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: E3

A bold and resilient girl who was abused and has run away from home to live in an artists' colony. She is now stuck in a new cycle of abuse. She and Moritz have a special connection and she reaches out to him in the last moments of his life.


ANNA* - Age: 15 to 20 Vocal range top: C5 Vocal range bottom: E3

A schoolgirl and Martha's best friend. Lively and free-spirited, she has a deep understanding of the injustices happening.


MARTHA* - Age: 15 to 20 Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: E3

An intelligent and kind schoolgirl who faces constant physical and sexual abuse from her father. She is fearful of being an outcast and kicked out of her home if she tells anyone. She harbors a secret crush towards Moritz.


THEA* - Age: 15 to 20 Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: E3

Wendla's best friend. She is sweet and energetic and trying to hold onto the belief in her parents and the systems around her.


MELCHIOR - Age: 15 to 20 Vocal range top: B4 Vocal range bottom: G2

An intelligent, rebellious, and caring boy who refuses to bow down to society's rules. An atheist and radical student. Struggles with his intense feelings for Wendla and his awakening sexual urges.


MORITZ - Age: 15 to 20 Vocal range top: A4 Vocal range bottom: C3

Melchior's best friend, an anxious, sweet, and sensitive boy. He desperately tries to please his father, but always seems to disappoint him. His haunting sexual dreams and academic failures eventually drive him to suicidal thoughts.


HANSCHEN* - Age: 15 to 20 Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: Ab2

A confident and cunning schoolmate of Melchior's. He chooses to manipulate the system to his benefit. He is comfortable with his own sexuality and uses his looks and intelligence to captivate Ernst.


ERNST* - Age: 15 to 20 Vocal range top: A4 Vocal range bottom: Ab2

A schoolmate of Melchior's. Sweet and naive, he feels deeply and falls in love with Hanschen.


GEORG* - Age: 15 to 20 Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: Ab2

A schoolmate of Melchoir's. He is in lust for his piano teacher and is open about his sexual desires.


OTTO* - Age: 15 to 20 Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: Ab2

A schoolmate of Melchior's. He struggles with feelings he considers inappropriate.


FRAU GABOR* - Age: 40 to 50 Vocal range top: A4 Vocal range bottom: D3

Melchior’s empathetic mother. Seemingly the only progressive adult in the town.
