Michael Cassara


Michael Cassara, CSA is a casting director and educator in New York City, where he and his team have cast over 400 theatre and film projects since 2003.  Recent credits include Forbidden Broadway (most recent two editions and cast albums), Fat Camp (off-Broadway), The 12 (Denver Center/world premiere), I Love Lucy® Live On Stage (2014–15 national tour), Heat Wave: The Jack Cole Project (dir. Chet Walker), Kingdom (The Old Globe, dir. Ron Daniels), A Little Night Music (starring Penny Fuller and Mark Jacoby), The Molly Maguires (dir. Sheryl Kaller, mus. dir. John McDaniel), Jeffrey Hatcher's Ten Chimneys (NY premiere), Nevermore (New World Stages and cast album) and many more.  Regional credits include productions at the Denver Center, Gulfshore Playhouse, The Old Globe, Great Lakes Theater, Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Infinity Theatre Company, San Jose Rep, Adirondack Theatre Festival and many more.  

Michael has served as the resident casting director of the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) since 2007, where he has cast over 70 musicals since the festival's inception in 2004.  Additionally, since 2013 he has served as the Resident Casting Director for the National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) and casts their star-studded Festival of New Musicals each October.  Specializing in new work, Michael regularly casts projects for many of the top emerging writers in the musical theatre field, including Kerrigan-Lowdermilk, Kooman & Dimond, Ryan Scott Oliver, Adam Gwon and many more.  

Film credits include The Hyperglot (dir. Michael Urie, Artios nomination for excellence in casting), Paper Dreams, Clear Blue Tuesday, Contest, and Grantham and Rose (dir. Kristin Hanggi, starring Marla Gibbs and Jake T. Austin.)  As an educator, he regularly teaches master classes and workshops at many of the nation's top universities and conservatories.  Originally a performer, Michael is a native Clevelander and a BFA graduate of the musical theatre program at Otterbein College, now Otterbein University.  Member, Casting Society of America. http://www.michaelcassara.net / @michaelcassar.
