2003 - 2004 Season

Texas State Black and Latino Playwright's Workshop

Artistic Director Eugene Lee

Each year, beginning this fall, Texas State will host a workshop using an original script by a black playwright. The play will be cast and rehearsed with the playwright in residence. This will then culminate in staged readings. Playwright-actor and Distinguished Alumnus, Eugene Lee, will be Artistic Director for the workshop. This promises to be an exciting way to begin our new season.

Transposing Shakespeare

By John Fleming

Directed by Charles Ney

An original by out own faculty member, John Fleming. This play is a romantic comedy, based on the premise of William Shakespeare and Stephen King being reversed in time. While everyone reveres King's Elizabethan tragedies, Billy Shakespeare struggles to get his work accepted in New York and Hollywood. Attempting to make it in a world that doesn't know who he is, Billy must also balance a long-distance relationship as well as growing tensions with his best friend. This show has been hailed as: "An enrapturing tale of comedy...Filled with wit and sometimes outrageous humor. Fleming has a delightful hit on his hands" (The Auburn Plainsman). This will be our entry into the American College Theatre Festival this year.

Metamorphoses

By Mary Zimmerman

Directed by Michael Costello

Nominated last year for a Tony award in the Best Play and Best Director categories, this play won the award for Best Director, who happened to be the writer. This is a beautiful, touching, and funny adaptation of Ovid's tales and blends mythic stories of love, lost and transformation with modern sensibility. Visually stunning, imaginative, thrilling, and magical in its theatrical telling, these ancient tales are as moving and as profound as ever. Performed in and around a pool of water, this production will be produced at Texas State, under the night sky, surrounded by trees, in our beautiful outdoor Glade Theatre. Metamorphoses will be a special theatrical event that is not to be missed.

Foxtales

Written and Directed by Charles Pascoe

This favorite children's musical play has received wide critical acclaim. It has been produced at the International Children's Festival held at Wolftrap in Fairfax, Virginia and our students performed it on a twelve-show tour of Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia in 1995. Foxtales also won first place in the Festival of Anglophone Theatrical Societies (F.E.A.T.S.) last year in Brussels, Belgium. It's all about Sonny Fox who wants to find out about the rest of the world. He meets up with other animals along the way that teach him a valuable lesson about the importance of friendship and working together.
