“Native” Texas State Students: Must have a Texas State University GPA of at least 2.50 at the time of application based on minimum of 60 semester credit hours of transcripted coursework. Of the 60 hour minimum, at least 30 must be General Studies Academic Foundations successfully completed, to reflect that the student is making satisfactory progress toward the academic degree. Failure to maintain a 2.50 Texas State University GPA will result in the student’s removal from the pre-professional program.
Transfer Students: Must have an overall transferred GPA of 2.50, based on a minimum of 60 semester credit hours of coursework. Of the 60 hour minimum, at least 30 must be General Studies. Academic Foundations successfully completed, to reflect that the student is making satisfactory progress toward the academic degree.
The first fulltime semester at Texas State University (12+ hours) must be a minimum Texas State University GPA of 2.50, based on a combination of General Studies courses, electives, and courses in the major area as determined by the academic advisor. From that time forward, ONLY the Texas State University GPA will be used to determine whether satisfactory progress is being made.
Transfer students with fewer than 60 semester hours are not immediately eligible for admission to the pre-professional program. At the point of eligibility, only the Texas State University GPA will be considered, and all other conditions above must be met.
It is highly recommended that transfer students who are interested in the BFA Acting Program transfer into the Texas State Theatre Department by the being of their sophomore year.
Additional admission requirements for the respective programs
Acting: Students seeking admission to the acting program will apply for entry the spring semester of their Sophomore year. Transfer students will apply at the beginning of the fall semester of the Junior year. Candidates must have completed the TH 1364 Beginning Acting, TH 1365 Intermediate Acting, TH 1340 Voice and Diction (Musical Theatre not required), TH 1354 Movement I, TH 2354 Characterization, and TH 3364 Acting Realism (Transfer students may fulfill this last requirement during the fall semester of their first year in BFA).
Musical Theatre: Students seeking admission to the musical theatre program will apply for entry the spring semester of their Sophomore year. Transfer students will apply at the beginning of the fall semester of the Junior year. Candidates must have completed the TH 1364 Beginning Acting, TH 1365 Intermediate Acting, TH 1354 Movement I, and TH 2354 Characterization (Transfer students may fulfill this last requirement during the fall semester of their first year in BFA).
Auditions:
Candidates will perform an audition (two contrasting pieces of no longer than 2 minutes total) for members of the acting faculty. Musical Theatre candidates will perform one monologue and sing two musical pieces, 16 bars each, 1 up-tempo piece and 1 ballad. The faculty will interview each candidate as part of the selection process. A consensus vote of the acting faculty is necessary for admission to the program.
Conditions of Acceptance
All students admitted to the BFA in acting and musical theatre will automatically be on probation every semester. There will be a thorough review of each candidate at the end of each semester. The acting faculty will make a decision for continuance at that time.
BFA Pre-Professional Program – Admission Requirements
Other requirements for BFA students include the following: (1) they must audition for and accept the roles assigned for all departmental productions in the main season; (2) students cannot commit to outside projects without written permission from the head of acting; (3) students are expected to demonstrate their continuing commitment through class attendance, performance (both in classes and in productions), and participation in all special BFA workshops/programs.
Design/Tech: Students seeking admission to the Design and Technology program should have completed TH 1358, TH 2338, and TH 3344 as part of the above required hours. After consultation with the Department Chairman, students enroll in TH 3390, which is both an audition and the beginning of advanced training for the program. Formal admission to the program may be granted upon successful completion of TH 3390 and a favorable faculty response to a portfolio review at the end of that class. Continuation in the program is dependent upon maintaining grades, adequate performance of production assignments and appropriate portfolio development.
